Which AirPods Do I Have?
Six AirPods models, four different case shapes, and Apple never printed the generation on the outside. Two minutes now saves posting a case back to us later.
The fastest way to check
Open the AirPods case lid with the AirPods inside, hold it near your iPhone, then go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods, and read the Model Name line. That gives you the generation in plain words.
No iPhone to hand? There is a model number printed in very small type on the underside of the charging case, near the hinge. And if all else fails, measure it — the widths below are far enough apart to tell them apart with a ruler.
Every model we fit
| Model | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro (1st gen) | 2.95 in / 75 mm | 1.97 in / 50 mm |
| AirPods Pro (2nd gen) | 2.76 in / 70 mm | 1.97 in / 50 mm |
| AirPods (1st gen) | 2.13 in / 54 mm | 2.20 in / 56 mm |
| AirPods (2nd gen) | 2.13 in / 54 mm | 2.20 in / 56 mm |
| AirPods (3rd gen) | 2.64 in / 67 mm | 2.05 in / 52 mm |
| AirPods (4th gen) | 2.36 in / 60 mm | 1.97 in / 50 mm |
All six are 0.98 in / 25 mm deep.
The three mix-ups worth knowing about
AirPods Pro 1st and 2nd generation
Same height, but the 2nd generation is about 5 mm narrower. That is enough that a 2nd gen rattles in a 1st gen case and a 1st gen will not go into a 2nd gen case at all. This is the most common mistake we see.
AirPods 1st and 2nd generation
Identical bodies. One case fits either, which is why we sell them as a single option rather than two.
AirPods 3rd and 4th generation
Both are the wide, short shape that replaced the tall original, but the 4th generation is roughly 4 mm narrower and 1.5 mm shorter. Close enough to look interchangeable in a photo, far enough apart that they are not.
Does the case block charging?
No. The charging port stays open and Qi wireless charging works through the case, so it goes on once and stays on. You do not need to take it off to charge.
What we do not fit
AirPods Max, and AirPods Pro 3rd generation. If your model is not in the table above it will not fit, and we would rather lose the sale than send you a case that will not close.
Still not sure? Email contact@casenoir.com with the Model Name line from Settings and we will tell you exactly which case you need — before you order, not after.
