Does a color screen need a different case?

Not structurally — the cutouts, the magnet placement and the corner geometry are identical to the 7" Paperwhite. What changes is what you might want on the front. Colorsoft owners tend to be the ones reading illustrated books, graphic novels and cookbooks, and several designs here are built around that: Stained Glass Floral, Aurora Nebula, Bright Folk Floral. If you bought the Colorsoft specifically for color, a flat two-tone cover can feel like a strange thing to wrap it in.

Sleep, wake, and the strap

Magnets in the lid work with the Colorsoft's own cover sensor: close it and the screen sleeps, open it and it lights. On the inside back panel there's a vertical elastic strap sewn top and bottom — you slide your hand in sideways and the Kindle sits against your palm, which is the difference between reading one-handed on a train and not.

The honest limitation

The print is on the front cover only. The back is matte black on every design in this collection, so if you were picturing a case that's colorful from every angle, it isn't one. There's also no pen loop and no stand — this is a reading case, not a Scribe case. And the Colorsoft's screen is the whole reason you bought it, so treat the cover as protection for a device you'll open constantly, not a hard shell for a bag with keys loose in it.
