Why green wears so well

A mid-to-dark green ground hides the two things that age a case fastest: the fingerprint smudging that collects along the opening edge, and corner rub from the inside of a bag. It reads as texture from a metre away rather than as a pattern demanding attention, so it stays easy to live with on an object you pick up every night. That combination is most of why these designs keep coming back.

Sage or forest?

Sage is grey-leaning and calm — it sits comfortably on a desk in an office and pairs best with debossed lettering, which needs a mid-tone ground to catch the light. Forest and emerald are richer and more dramatic, and they suit the gothic and heritage designs; a monogram on a very dark green is close to invisible in flat light, so if you are personalizing, go lighter.
